Florida State Contractor License Regulations

To perform construction work in the State of Florida you must be certified or registered. You can get a registered contractor's license at the local level, unless a certified license is required by the county you wish to work in. Contractors with a certified license are permitted to work anywhere in the state. To obtain information on whether a certified contractor is licensed with the state, click here. Certified licenses are issued by Department of Business & Professional Regulation, you may also call (850) 487-1395. Division I exams have three parts: business and finance, contract administration, and project management. You must pass all three parts to become a licensed certified contractor. There are general minimum insurance requirements as follows-General and building contractors - $300,000 bodily injury, 50,000 property damage, and all other categories - 100,000 bodily injury, 25,000 property damage.The board may waive the exam requiremets and grant licensure by endorsement if an applicant is licensed in another state where requirements and exams are similar. The fee for the examination is $135, and a credit report with your application package. For information concerning workers' compensation, which is a requirement, please contact the Florida Department of Financial Services or call them direct at (850) 413-1601. All contractors are required to pass the OSHA exam.
